Connected New Zealand

According to 2007 figures from research company Nielsen Media Research, 86 percent of people in New Zealand connect to the Internet from home, school, work, libraries or Internet cafes.

Nielsen Media Research says 72 percent of the New Zealand population have access to the Internet from home.

Of those with Internet access at home, 49 percent of these people have a broadband connection.

The research company believes 74 percent of New Zealanders are regular Internet users, and 60 percent use the Internet daily.

Online Activities

Sending and receiving email is the most popular online activity for regular users, with 81 percent performing this activity.

General web browsing  (62 percent) and  Internet banking (47 percent) are the next most popular online activities.

As at July 2007, 51 percent of regular users had made a purchase on the Internet in the last 12 months. This represents 1,319,000 people and is an increase of almost 22 percent year-on-year.

Purchasing airline tickets was the most popular with 52 percent having made airline ticket purchases in the last 12 months.

In addition, there are over 70 .nz domain name registrars, several hundred web designers and a huge number of businesses using the Internet.
