INZ/DNC Network Renovation

Project Description: Rebuilding, and upgrading of the existing networks that support the INZ and DNC offices.

Project Budget: N/A

Overall Progress Summary: A work in progress.

Activities Planned for November 2008:

New Samba Servers to be deployed-November. INZ and DNC to be separated into two separate subnets. Router upgrades to prepare for IPv6. General Maintenance. Documentation of network architecture continues.

Major Future Plans: 

  • Convert networks to IPv6 (sometime early to mid 2009 this should be running)
  • Upgrade border router (maybe before the end of the year)
  • Build NAS to handle video streaming archiving
  • Complete Telepresense project (see access grid)

Project History:

November 2008:

  • New Samba Servers Online
  • Separate Samba DNC from INZ
  • Move old Servers to Auckland for Off Site backups

October 2008:

  • Syslog Server Online
  • New Samba Servers built and tested
  • Reception Moved Upstairs
  • Cross Syslog Planned
  • Network prepared for Reception Move to Upstairs
  • Upstairs Printer added for Meeting Printing

September 2008:

  • New Firewall. Running on BSD. Also firewall now running on commercial server.
  • Plone server (INZ Website) moved to commercial server on INZ address space.
  • Attempt to upgrade router memory to handle ipv6. It can't handle it. Moving on to see about replacing router.
  • Support for Online Debate.
  • Ongoing maintenance and documentation as usual.

August 2008:

  • Replaced OS's in all wifi access points with open source secure OS
  • added redundant wifi access points for both level 9 and level 10
  • Vmware server added to server farm
  • Hard drives installed in several servers to provide RAID and increased storage
  • Increased memory on several servers
  • SSL certificates renewed for two years
  • New Mail Server put online in INZ global address space (no more nat)
  • streamlined network access and cabling for level 10 rack
  • Cabling improvements to main server rack in machine room.
  • Ongoing maintenance and documentation.

July 2008:

  • Wiki Site Created for online Documentation and support
  • Prepare for mail server migration
  • Mail Server and Samba server to be separated into different servers
  • Servers to be upgraded to Dell standard (hot swap power supplies and PERC)
  • APTLD server moved to INZ address space on commercial server ( no more nat and better box)
  • Network Map rebuilt and uploaded to Wiki Site (maintained on change)
  • Increased security for all servers with new firewalls on each global address space server
  • SSH access box added to server farm
  • INZ address space delegated and activated through APNIC
  • LIST servers migrated to commercial server
  • NZNOG (INZ sponsored server) built and put online
  • SMOOTHWALL firewall upgraded (to probably be changed to something running on BSD later)
  • NAGIOS watchdog servers put in place with partner servers in the US for added alert efficiency.

June 2008:

  • Assess network situation for coming upgrades and changes
  • cabling labeled
  • cabling cleaned up
  • power sources improved
  • Giant commercial generator UPS installed with event emailing capabilities.
  • Server room re wired to insure operational compliance with rooftop diesel generator
  • high current mains outlets added to server room to prepare for UPS
  • clone computers now running as servers for APTLD, and other mission critical systems assessed (and will be upgraded to commercial servers).
  • Smokeping installed for network monitoring
  • MUNIN installed for network monitoring.
