(Links to Strategy 1: Advocacy and Public Policy)
Project Sponsor:
Staff Support: Keith Davidson
Project Status: Active
Project Description:
This initiative was a discussion point between Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), Netsafe NZ, and InternetNZ at the GKP meeting in December 2007 and was included as a possible funding line in the INZ 2008 / 09 Business Plan.
The first stage of work is to test if a "country by country" solution for the Pacific Islands is preferred to an overall extension of the Netsafe NZ programme into the Pacific Islands, identifying Samoa as a test bed.
INZ has agreed to provide input into the discussions, and to provide some seed funding, but is not the lead agency in the project
Project Budget:
$20,000 has been budgeted for the project in 2008/09.
Overall Progress Summary:
No progress to date
Activities Planned for November 2008:
Further discussions with Netsafe NZ and SPC.
Project History:
October 2008:
Ongoing discussions with Netsafe NZ, and SPC. GKP have advised they will not be funding this project, but likelyhood that SPC will be able to match INZ funding. NetsafeNZ developing a draft programme, with the view of trialling in Niue.
September 2008:
The "One Laptop Per Child" (OLPC) programme commenced in the Pacific Islands, with initially Nuie being provided 500 OLPC's for their entire young peoples population, and further deployment by SPC continuing. This has highlighted a more pressing need to progress the concept of a Netsafe Pacific programme.
Discussions with Netsafe NZ occurred in September, and Netsafe will follow up on earlier discussions with GKP in October.
December 2007:
Discussions at GKP meeting between interested parties, resulted in recommendation for inclusion in 2008/09 Business Plan.
