Project Description:

The Parliamentary Internet Caucus brings together Members of Parliament to learn about technology issues. It is co-chaired by David Cunliffe and Maurice Williamson.
InternetNZ provides support and assistance in identifying suitable speakers.

Project Budget:

$10,000 has been budgeted for the Parliamentary Internet Caucus project in 2008/09.

Overall Progress Summary:

The last PIC was held in November and featured Cyberlaw Fellow Philip Greene and ICANN Chair Peter Dengate Thrush on the subject of Internet governance. Due to timing difficulties PIC meetings have been postponed until after the election.

July 2008

July meeting was unable to proceed. Meetings postponed until after election.

June 2008

June meeting was unable to proceed, so focus is on July meeting with possibility of another in August.

May 2008

Broadband and Fibre was chosen as the subject for the first of the two meetings in June, with two presenters arranged.

April 2008

Proposed ideas for two PIC meetings. These will be held on 17 June and 22 July.

2007

Three Parliamentary Internet Caucus events were held in 2007 covering the topics  of Digital Broadcasting, Cybersafety, and Internet Governance.

October 2006:

David Farrar, Keith Davidson and Jordan Carter presented to the inaugural PIC meeting held on October 17, 2006. This was attended by 20 MPs.

MPs agreed that David Cunliffe and Maurice Williamson would co-chair the group, and they would work to establish a mailing and resource list, and consult with InternetNZ on future speakers and content for the Caucus meetings.
