Website Redevelopment

(Links to Strategy 4: Organisational Capability)

Project Sponsor: Executive Committee

Staff Support: Nick Wallingford

Project Status: Active Smiley Smiley

Project Description:

Prior to 2005, the InternetNZ website was created manually using static HTML.  In 2005, a major transition was made to the use of the Plone/Zope combination for a Content Management System. This project describes the transition from the initial Plone/Zope site to one based on the newer 3.x version of Plone.

Project Budget:

$25,000 has been budgeted for the Website Redevelopment project in 2008/09.

Overall Progress Summary:

Previous website materials were copied to development instance and eventually made 'live' in late September 2008.  Since then, additional functionality has been added, as well as automated and documented backup/restore systems.

Activities Planned for November 2008:

Investigation of performance improvements.  Transition form submission to entirely secure system.

Project History:

The choice of Plone/Zope for the InternetNZ web site has provided massive potential opportunities, but also presented a number of technical challenges due to the complexity of the products involved.

The site had not been gradually upgraded through Plone/Zope versions so the conversion to the 3.x branch of Plone has been particularly complex.

The development of the conversion scripting has taken a number of iterations to ensure that all content will get included into the new site.

Additionally, new server hardware additions have been included into the project, so all work has needed to be duplicated so the existing site can remain online.
